What is the Tone Lab?

Recently I’ve added a new section to the website called the Tone Lab. I think it’s a great way to demonstrate many different combinations of gear to show you what they sound like. Also, it’s a great way for me to document and be able to recall all of my gear settings and tones that I find along the way.

Many times when I find a certain sound that I am looking for, I’ll never write down the exact settings that I used to get it. Then, it’s essentially lost forever. With this new Tone Lab system, I can always go back and see exactly what gear I used to get the tones as well as the gear settings. So this new category will be very helpful for myself as well as others who visit the site.

Each tone lab video will be a short 2-3 minute demo of me playing solo or with a backing track. I hope to put out 2 new Tone Labs every week so there will be a lot of different videos to choose from pretty quickly.

If you ever wanted to hear what a Ibanez TS9, the Fender Twin, and my Squier Tele sounds like together, then you will be able to do that as well as find that video fairly quickly by using the new ajax filtering system that I have implemented.

Ajax Filtering

When I was creating the new tone Lab category, I wanted a way for people to be able to filter the results by Guitar, Amp, Pedal, or any combination. I am not a web developer by any means, but I have learned a few things along the way. I’m always up for trying something new as well and this was one of those difficult functions for me to implement.

I was able to achieve the ajax filtering I was going for and it has led to many new ideas I never would have thought of. I’m now using this ajax filter system in the Store as well so now you can select any category of lessons that you are looking for by using this new system. This also allows you to stay on the same web page while searching for lessons, instead of jumping to a new category page when clicking a link.

I think it’s working great so far and after testing the web pages, the results are showing very positively with page visitors.

As the Tone Lab grows, the need for a filter system will become more apparent. If there are 100 videos to choose from, then having the filter system will make it much easier to find a video with the gear that you want to watch. You can check out the Tone Lab here.
